What kind of arched windows to choose? Arched windows (with an arched frame)

18 June 2024 |

Arched windows – in this way, in simple terms, we’re talking about windows in which the upper part has a different shape than the standard rectangle. Each window consists of a frame and a sash, and these elements determine the division of arched windows. Arched windows: A. in an arched frame; B. in a rectangular frame; C. in a rectangular frame with an arched filling, the so-called false arch windows.

In this section we will discuss arched windows in an arched frame.

A. Arched windows in an arched frame – regardless of the type of window (single-leaf, double-leaf or with a fanlight, so-called fix) the frame or sash is always in the shape of an arc.

For this variant, the window hole in the wall must also have a shape suitable for the window’s arc.

The arch is determined on the basis of the following elements: span – the distance of the points at the point of support of the arch, arrow – the biggest distance betweem the straight line connecting the points of support and the highest point of the arch measured vertically (h).

Depending on how the shape of the arc is determined, we use a division into 6 types:

1. Segmental arch: one radius (r) passing through the points of support of the arc and a certain height (h), 2. Basket arch: plotted with three arcs (r), 3. Semicircular arc: one radius (r), which is the height of the arc, 4. Arc + straight segment: plotted with two arcs of radius (r) connected by straight segments that meet at a point that is the height of the arch, 5. Gothic arc: plotted with two arches that pass through the points of support of the arch and join at a point that is the height of the arch, 6. Non-standard arcs: can take different shapes while maintaining symmetry.

Windows in an arched frame are most often used in historical buildings, where the window holes were made according to the traditional masonry method. In such objects when dilapidated old windows need to be replaced with new ones, we make them based on the template of the window hole. This is a labor-intensive process, but one that gives the final satisfaction of preserved original architectural elements both inside and outside the building.
