Arched windows – in this way, in simple terms, we are talking about windows in which the upper part has a different shape than the standard rectangle. Each window consists of a frame and a sash, and these elements determine the division of arched windows. Arched windows: A. in an arched frame; B. in a rectangular frame; C. in a rectangular frame with an arched filling of so-called false arch windows.
In this section we will discuss arched windows in a rectangular frame.
B. Arched windows in rectangular frame – regardless of the type of window (single-leaf, double-leaf or with a fanlight, the so-called fix) the frame in the upper part of the window is rectangular. The main frame structure is arched, while in the lintel at the top it’s completed so that it formsa rectangular outline. The sash has an arched shape.
Depending on how the shape of the arc is determined, we use a division into 6 types:
1. Segmental arch: one radius (r) passing through the points of support of the arc and a certain height (h), 2. Basket arch: plotted with three arcs (r), 3. Semicircural arc: one radius (r), which is the height of the arc, 4. Arc + straight segment: plotted with two arcs of radius (r) connected by straight segments that meet at a point that is the height of the arch, 5. Gothic arc: plotted with two arches that pass through the points of support of the arch and join at a point that is the height of the arch, 6. Non-standard arcs: can take different shapes while maintaining symmetry.
The arch is determined on the basis of the following elements: span – the distance of the points at the point of support of the arch, arrow – the biggest distance betweem the straight line connecting the points of support and the highest point of the arch measured vertically (h).
Windows in rectangular frame – for this variant, most often the window hole in the wall is rectangular. It happens that the window hole can be arched from the outside and rectangular from the inside. Such a case occurs when the facade of the building has a preserved old character – historic and the interior is after numerous previous modernizations. Then arched windows in a rectangular frame, in a way, reconcile these two different requirements.
As in the case of arched-frame windows, the window is made on the basis of exact measurements (straight arches) and a template of the window hole. It’s important that from the outside the window should fit exactly into the arc of the facade.
