Wooden windows – invisible hinges

18 March 2024 |

Hinges ensure the functionality of window and are therefore an essential element. This article applies to window hinges on inward-opening windows.

For some, the appearance of the hinges may be extremely important because, for example, it is to emphasize the historical character of the window, while for others it is an “unnecessary” protruding element that disfigures the window. So, some people want to show this element of the window at all costs, while others want to hide it, choosing the color of the hinge covers so that it is as little noticeable as possible.

There are two standard hinge models to choose from in our windows:

‘Standard’ hinges ensuring the tilt-and-turn function and hinges screwed into the rebate, the so-called 3DHinges available for casement windows only. For both hinge models, special covers are available, placed on the hinges, which can change the color of the hinge and give it a different shape.

In this article, we propose a solution for a group of recipients who are bothered by the sight of window fittings.

Invisible hinges, as the name suggests, are fittings that cannot be seen when the window is closed (1). They are hidden in the space between the door leaf and the frame, whereby  we get rid of the protruding (visible) elements of standard hinges (2). The appearance of the window from the outside does not change.

The advantage, apart from aesthetic values, is undoubtedly greater thermal insulation because the continuity of the seal is maintained (in the case of standard hinges, the upper hinge “interrupts” the seal lines, which causes the so-called thermal bridges to form). Greater tightness also means better acoustic insulation.

Invisible hinges are suitable for windows and balcony doors with a leaf area of up to 3 m² or 150 kg. Thanks to their special design, they allow the leaf to be opened up to 95°.
